Catholic Ethos« back to home

As a Catholic school we are committed to the integration of faith, life and culture in the education of the whole child. We aim to nurture all aspects of students’ physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual wellbeing.

St John’s vision for education celebrates our Catholic identity and is based on the fundamental belief that life is sacred. We strive to live as Jesus taught us as we pass on our Catholic tradition. ‘The love of Christ urges us on’ is the motto of our founders, the Sisters of Charity, and it is still very much at the heart of the school ethos today.

As a parish primary school we play a vital role within the Parish of Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Collingwood and Clifton Hill. The school looks to the teachings of Jesus by honouring the values of respect and responsibility, courage and compassion, service and loyalty that lie at the heart of our community.

The connection between the school and the parish is a very important part of Catholic life and forms an enriching part of the school experience at St John’s. Twice a term the parish has a class from the school involved in the liturgy at a 10.30am Sunday Mass. The children’s presence at Masses show a clear commitment from the school to be part of the life of the parish and have proved to be joyful occasions for all. We continue to encourage both teachers and parents to support these school Masses by being involved in any way they feel able.

Our School Prayer

God of Wonders, grant us your guidance and blessing as we carry on the work of our founders, the Sisters of Charity; we give thanks for our history and we look forward to continuing the tradition.

Open our eyes to the needs of the world around us so that we can truly become leaders in the world today and tomorrow.

Help us to learn and grow, and to love Your Son, Jesus.
