Mandarin« back to home

St John’s has embraced Mandarin as our Language Other Than English (LOTE). We are conscious of our place within the wider Asian geographic area and our language program seeks to broaden our understanding of and engagement with the region.

The emphasis of the program is on learning the various sounds employed in Mandarin, the formation of Chinese characters, developing a growing vocabulary of words and learning a little about Chinese culture. Reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are core components of the Mandarin program.

Our LOTE program also enables us to address some of the cross-curricular priorities developed as part of the new Australian curriculum. An important part of the work carried out in the Mandarin program is to promote an awareness of another culture and to have the children begin to consider life from a perspective other than the one they are immersed in.
