Playgroups & Orientation« back to home

At St John’s we hold three playgroup sessions and three orientation mornings to aid your child's transition into Prep. Through our transition program we endeavour to welcome families and develop positive partnerships that will continue throughout your child's time at St John's Primary School.

We hold three playgroup afternoons in October between 2.30 pm and 3.15 pm to enable children coming into the following year’s Prep class to meet each other in an informal setting. The playgroups are held in the Aikenhead Hall and are supervised by school staff.

The playgroups help children to become accustomed to each other and develop some familiarity with the school. We ask the parents attending these sessions to bring a plate for afternoon tea as this is also an opportunity for parents to start developing their own new relationships.

Parent Information Night

A parent information night is held in November after the playgroup sessions have finished to give parents an opportunity to ask questions and ensure they have all the information they need to help their child make a successful start in Prep.

Orientation Mornings

Further to the playgroups, three orientation mornings are held in the Prep classrooms during November. These sessions are more formal in nature and are an opportunity for teachers to start observing interactions between children and begin gauging the abilities of children as they prepare to start school. Parents are not required to stay for these sessions unless they wish to. The sessions run from 9.30 am to 11 am.
