Newsletter - End of November

1. From The Principal

Dear Families,

Many people have expressed amazement that we are actually in the month of December – the year has certainly flown and the count down to Christmas and the holidays has begun all around us.

Scholastic Book Fair

Thanks to Gina Varrasso and Jennifer Gan for once again organising our annual Book Fair. Thank you too to the staff and parents who volunteered to look after the sales before and after school, your assistance was invaluable. This year’s Fair as a little down on past years but we had a turnover of $1005 and managed a commission with bonuses of $410 which has enabled us to purchase some new literature sets for guided reading sessions and some books for the general collection as well. A fantastic effort with thanks to all who made a purchase. I hope that the children enjoy the items that were purchased.

Year 7 Transition Days

Last week we had the last of our Prep 2020 Orientation Mornings and the children met their buddies for the first time. Over the course of this week and the next couple of weeks, our Grade 6 students, at the other end of the school journey, have or will be engaging in their own transition and orientation activities as they begin the move to secondary school. We wish all of the Grade 6s all the best for these important days that set them up to begin with a positive start next year.

SRC Talent Show

Last week the SRC held their annual Talent Show event and the acts were thoroughly enjoyed by an appreciative audience. Congratulations to all of our brave performers, whether solo or in groups, on both getting out there and having a go and on the quality of the performances too. The judging was very difficult and the final marks were very tight.

Winners of the Talent Show

This year we divided the talent show into four sections.

Encouragement award – Edith

Comedy Section – Ned, Alex and Martin

Instrumental Section Zion

Singing and Dancing Section – Amelia, Jayda, Erin and Elise

Other – “Cinderella” – Sofia N, Sofia G, Jessica N, Annie, Anna, Eliza and Matilda C

Mini Vinnies Icy Pole Fundraiser

Thanks to Ewan and the Mini Vinnies team for their icy pole initiative over the last couple of Fridays. Sales have been brisk and this is expected to continue this Friday. A great big thank you to all of those families who have made donations of packets of icy poles to enable this event to go ahead. Proceeds are going to Bicycles for Humanity, a charity that is focused on the alleviation of poverty through sustainable transport in the form of a bike. More information on the work of Bicycles for Humanity can be found here.

Classes for 2020

Classes for 2020 have now been finalised. A communication about the structure for next year, staffing and fees and levies will be sent out to all families tomorrow, please look out for this. Teachers have worked hard to arrange well balanced classes that have a range of learning needs across each class. They have taken into account a broad range of factors to ensure the most positive learning arrangements for the year ahead and success for each and every student at St John’s.

Mango Drive

A very big thank you to our Parents and Friends for the organisation of this year’s mango drive. Many trays of mangoes were delivered yesterday and most of these have now found their way to those who placed orders. I hope everyone enjoys the delicious juicy fruits.

Our next Reflection will be the last for the year and my last at St John’s.

Fr Martin hopes to shortly be able to make an announcement on the new appointee to the position of Principal of our school so we will all look forward to that news when it arrives.

Until then, respectfully,

Daniel 🙂

3. From The P&F

Dear parents and friends,

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ according to my kids who have been practicing at home for the Carols this week! And as hard as it is to believe, we really are in the final weeks of the school year. I’m thinking of all the grade 6 parents preparing for the graduation, it’s such a wonderful and celebratory conclusion to the end of 7 years of primary school. I hope you all enjoy this special time with your graduates. Whether it be your first or last one of these, be prepared for the tears, they creep up on you!!!

There are only a couple of P&F events left for the year. The most important being our Collingwood Children’s Farm Cake Stall on Saturday 14th December.  We would love some extra help for this.

As you can see we have very few people, wearing a lot of hats! We need your help. Please consider coming along to a meeting to see what we do. The meetings are very relaxed and short. We know people are busy so always endeavour to ensure meeting are kept to an hour maximum. If you want to join but can’t make the meetings, we can make that work too!

In particular, we are on the look out for volunteers for treasurer and major events in 2021. If you are at all interested it would be great for you to come along and see what is required, or feel free to talk to anyone on the committee for info on what the role involves. You could even take on an assistant position to get a feel for what is involved.

Please don’t wait for someone else to step up, the more hands we have the more the work is shared around.
