Newsletter - End of October

1. From The Principal

Dear Families,

Welcome to the End of October Reflection. The year is certainly racing along and we are fast heading for the Christmas Season – I was reminded the other day that it is only two months to Christmas Day and the stores are certainly reflecting that fact. Here at St John’s we have not yet completely turned our minds to this as there are still plenty of learning and other events to come before then.

Twilight House Sports 2019

Last Friday we gathered at the George Knott Reserve on Heidelberg Road for our annual Twilight Sports. This event is held every year to encourage our school community to gather and it was wonderful to once more see so many of our families present. It is great for staff to be able to catch up with past students and also a great opportunity to see many parents who find it difficult to attend other school events, especially some of our dads. My thanks to Mr Anthony Falcone for his organisation prior to and during the evening, to the staff for giving over their Friday evening to supervise and run events, and to all of those parents and past students who took on roles – whether in the canteen, on the BBQ, or at events – to make the night the success that it was. I commend all of the children for their sportsmanship during all of the activities and their encouragement of each other and especially thank our House Captains, Alex, Jayda, Paolo and Zion for their leadership and good example. Congratulations goes to those in Harman House who won the House Cup for the first time in ten years, a great sporting effort!

Prep 2020 Playgroups

It has been great over the last couple of weeks to meet our preps for next year and to get to know them and their parents a little bit better. We have now had three playgroup afternoons and, next month, we will have three more formal orientation mornings in the classroom. Towards the end of this time the younger children will meet their Grade 6 buddies for next year and spend a little bit of time with them. We particularly welcome some new families next year in addition to the younger siblings of some of our existing children.

Kids On Queens Visit

It was great to welcome a small group of preschool children from Kids On Queens to our school last week. The children enjoyed a library session with some of our older children as well as time on the playground. They will return later this year for their graduation ceremony.

Halloween Lunch Orders

Thanks again to the Parents and Friends fro their hard work in preparing today’s Halloween lunch orders. Each term the children look forward to the special themed lunch orders and the hard work of the parents involved, coupled with the generosity of the wider parent community, helps to raise finds for the school too. The spooky food today was greatly appreciated by all.

2020 Parents and Friends

We are calling for nominations for executive positions for the P&F for next year. We have a number of parents coming to the end of their time at St John’s and other’s who are looking to take a step back after active involvement so if you are looking to get more involved with the social and fundraising work of this important group in our school community, please let us know – it would be great if some of our dad’s felt free to put their hand up in addition to many of our mums if possible. The AGM for the P&F is to be held on Tuesday 19th November at 7pm in Aikenhead Hall. I look forward to seeing you there.

Scholastic Book Fair 2019

This year’s Scholastic Book Fair is set to happen once again next month. The displays will be set up in our Library as it was last year. This is a fantastic opportunity to get in some early Christmas presents. The dates for your calendar are: the afternoon of Wednesday 20th November, and the morning and afternoon of 21st, 22nd, 25th and 26th November. Please click on this link for more details. Any parents who would like to volunteer some time to handle sales during the Book Fair could let me know either in person or via email to the office –

Shade Sail Repairs

Sharp eyed parents may notice that the twin shade sails over the junior playground have now been replaced with a single sail. We also took the opportunity to update some of the fastenings. Both of these actions along with the topping up of the soft-fall mulch during the holidays were focused on continued student safety. We will also shortly be having both sets of equipment professionally inspected to ensure that everything is still tight and up to code.

Calendar and Weekly Bulletin

Please continue to check the calendar for upcoming events this term, it is a busy one. Subscription to the Weekly Bulletin is part of your subscription to this Reflection, if you are not getting both then please let us know.

Until next time, respectfully, Daniel 🙂

3. From The P&F

Dear Parents and Friends,

Thank you so much to everyone for getting their mango orders in! Nothing like a couple of hot days to start you thinking of all things summer, fresh juicy mangoes, mango sorbet and mango daiquiris, which you will all be enjoying come December!

I will confirm with you the exact pick up date for mangoes once we have it.

I think the children all enjoyed their Halloween themed lunch orders today, thanks to Clare Fraser for helping get all those spider and ghostly cookies to the classrooms!

There are only a couple of P&F events left for the year. The most important being our Collingwood Children’s Farm Cake Stall on Saturday 14th December. Please note the change of date for this one.

Coming up for term 4

Parents and Friends Annual General Meeting: Tuesday 19th November

All are invited. We would love to see some new faces at our AGM.

If you are at all interested in getting involved we are looking for new members to help organise the P&F events. It doesn’t have to be onerous if we all pitch in. So please give some thought to getting involved for 2020.

If you would like to be a part of the P&F, or are just interested in learning more, please come along. It is a very low key and relaxed get together. If you can’t make it but still want to be part, please contact Julia 0407 343637

Collingwood Children’s Farm Cake Stall: Saturday 14th December

We will need you to get your baking tins out and whip up some family favourites!

We will be giving everyone some inspiration for baking for the stall, shortly.

If you can lend a hand either baking or on the day please contact Julia, 0407 343637

Christmas Raffle: Drawn Monday 16th December

A raffle prize that will make sure your house is the best decorated in the street!

End of Year BBQ: Friday 13th December

Put your dancing shoes on for one last hurrah to celebrate making it through the school year. Phew!

Thanks again to all the people who help us to run these events and activities, we can’t do it without you!

Have a great break,

4. FINAL Art Extension Term 4 2019

Dear Parents

The Art extension program will continue to offer opportunities for students to extend their art experience beyond the regular classroom curriculum.

We engage specialised art techniques and therapeutic art practices to support the independent learning and thriving for young people.

Students will refine creative skills, develop confidence in personal and social communication and improve self -expression through practising a visual language. Concepts and themes of the practice address wellbeing and social connection.

Only a limited number can be offered a place, as the specific tuition requires a small group.

Please register your interest to enrol with me, not the office, via email by the end of October. My email address is
