1. From The Principal
Welcome back to school for the winter term, I hope that you are all staying warm and dry and that all of our children are rested and ready for another term of learning and growth.
Many in our community will have fond memories of Mary-Anne Balmer, former teacher and Deputy Principal of the school, who passed away unexpectedly at the end of the 2014 school year. I am deeply saddened to let you all know that Mary-Anne’s husband, Bill Poon, passed away, also quite unexpectedly, on the weekend. Some of you will be aware that Mary-Anne and Bill have two daughters, now both at secondary school, and our hearts and prayers go out to them at this distressing time. We also keep Mary-Anne’s brothers and her mother, Marie, in our thoughts and prayers. Along with the staff who knew Mary-Anne, Bill and the girls, I share the deep sadness and distress that many of you will be feeling at this news. Our community came together strongly in the wake of Mary-Anne’s death, it is my hope that we will be able to do so again in support of any who are struggling with this news. Please continue to keep the girls and the wider Balmer-Poon family in your prayers over the next weeks.
Werribee Open Range Zoo Excursion
Notes went home last term in regard to this exciting whole school excursion, scheduled for next Thursday, 25th July. If you have not yet seen this note and the attached permission form, please contact your child’s teacher or the office so that we can be sure that all are good to go on the day itself. Likewise, if you have any questions about the event, please contact your child’s teacher or the organiser, Melanie Granata.
“St John’s School, Clifton Hill, holds the care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people as a central and fundamental responsibility of all Catholic educators. This commitment is drawn from and inherent to the teaching and mission of Jesus Christ, with love, justice and the sanctity of each human person at the heart of the Gospel…. Creating a child-safe school environment is a dynamic process that involves active participation and responsibility by the school, its families and our wider community. This is marked by collaboration, vigilance and proactive approaches across policies, procedures, curriculum and practices.” (Statement of Commitment to Child Safety, St John’s School, Clifton Hill, 2016).
As part of this commitment, staff and students will be undertaking programs this term in body safety and protective behaviours. Because this is a whole school community issue, we are also offering a parent program to take place on Thursday 8th August from 6:30-8:30 pm in Aikenhead Hall; it is our hope that at least one parent from every family attend this important event. Topics covered will include:
- The ten key areas of body safety including consent, assertive communication, safe and unsafe touch as well as identifying trusted adults
- Supporting at children, staff and families including self-care
- Frequently asked questions about body safety and protective behaviours education.
We have engaged Body Safety Australia to facilitate these programs for us; more information about them and their programs can be found on their website www.bodysafetyaustralia.com.au. We will be sending out a flyer with an RSVP later this week so please keep an eye out for this.
Today we welcomed Kevin Harrison to the school. Kevin is currently studying Education Support at RMIT and will join us for the practical component of his course on Tuesdays over this semester. We hope that his time with us is both enjoyable and worthwhile.

I draw your attention to two upcoming events.
The first is the Parish Fun Night scheduled to take place this weekend on Saturday night at St Joseph’s Hall in Collingwood. Information was sent out yesterday about this event. Tickets are available through the Parish Office from Joan Parr. Alternatively, you could speak with Melanie Granata or Jennifer Jacobs-Vandegeer to find out more. I look forward to celebrating Christmas in July with as many of our families as possible on this night.
The second event that I hope everyone has in their schedules is the P&F Comedy Night on Saturday 17th August commencing at 6:30 pm. Last year’s event was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. This is the perfect night to get a group of friends together and enjoy good food, good company, and plenty of feel good laughs.
Until next time, respectfully, Daniel 🙂
