Newsletter - November 2017

1. From The Principal

Dear Families,

Another month has come and gone and we are now all on the rollercoaster ride to the Christmas Season. Life at St John’s is very busy as we wrap up learning for this year, prepare reports to go out in the final week and celebrate successes. We are also looking towards next year and ensuring that everything is in place to start the new school year well.

Art Show

What a successful Art Show we had on Friday 10th of November! My thanks on behalf of the school community go to Michele Davies for all of the work covered in Visual Arts over the last year, and to the team of senior students who worked with Michele to curate the exhibition for this year. It was wonderful to see the high quality completed works arranged so well, and to appreciate the thought and care that this team of enthusiastic people brought to the task. The weather was very kind to us enabling us to flow out of the hall, through the library and into the junior playground space where people were able to gather as a community and share their reflections on the children’s work. The donations box on the night raised $170 which will go towards the Visual Arts budget for next year, a big thanks to all who contributed.

2018 Prep Orientation

Our Orientation Program for next year’s Preps has now concluded. A sincere thanks to Antoniette Stasi for facilitating the sessions, to the parents for supporting their children in attending, and most of all to the children themselves for coming along with so much enthusiasm for this next step in their learning journey. We look forward to welcoming them all back next year as they join us full time.

Book Fair

This year’s Scholastic Book Fair was again a successful event with many purchases for Christmas and also just because reading is so enjoyable. My thanks on behalf of the community go to our Library Technicians, Jennifer Gan and Gina Varrasso, for their organisation of the event once more, and to staff and parents who assisted on the front desk with sales. We managed to raise well over $600 dollars towards new book stock for our library through this event, so well done to all involved and enjoy the new stories.

Ladies and Girls Night

Last Friday Night saw many of our mums and their daughters gather for a friendly and fun evening in Aikenhead Hall. Although I was not allowed to attend (a fact made very clear to me by a number of our younger students who actually chased me out of the hall!) I believe that there was a great atmosphere and that all present had a lovely time. Thanks to Rose Cosmos and Connie Cabral for organising this special event.

2018 Classes and Staffing

Staffing for next year has now been finalised and teachers have been assigned to classes. Next year’s class teachers and specialists are:

Prep/1                 Mrs Antoniette Stasi

Grade 2/3N         Mrs Ann Nolan

Grade 2/3T          Ms Narelle Taylor

Grade 4/5            Ms Melanie Granata and Mrs Carlie Dowley

Grade 5/6            Ms Hayley Dustow

Visual Arts           Ms Michele Davies

PE                        Mr Anthony Falcone

Mandarin              Mrs Sarah Huang

Performing Arts    Mr Daniel Ryan

Class allocations will be announced to the children on the final Monday of the school year. As mentioned to you previously, we are grateful for conversations that parents can have with their children leading up to this announcement so that they are able to bring a growth mindset to their new class right from Day 1.

There are a number of staff who will be leaving us for new challenges at the end of this year.  Staff who are moving on are Ms Bernadette Riley, Mr Brian Booley, Mr Wol Dut, Ms Kath Answerth, Ms Domonique Heard, Ms Leah Gates and Mrs Inez Barette. I will be thanking these staff members for their contribution in the final reflection of the year later this month.

Deepest Sympathy

I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Del Johnston on the passing of her partner Rob. Rob and Del moved to Melbourne and together they became very involved with the care of Del’s grandchildren Ivana and Jordan. Rob’s commitment to this role remained solid until his death.  Rob passed away in St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne on 8th October 2017.

We also extend our deepest sympathy to the Tyrrell family on the passing of Ned’s Great Grandma,  Oma to Ned.  Lotte Reisser was aged 93 and passed away on the 25th of November.

At this time we also remember and extend our deepest sympathies to Inez Barette and family, Inez’s father Charlie Zammit passed away on 15th of November aged 85.

As a community our thoughts and prayers are with these families.

Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and may perpetual light shine upon them.

Don’t forget the Parish Celebration this Sunday to celebrate the beginning of Advent. Mass is at 10:30am and a BBQ and variety of foods will be available along with the regular Jumping Castle afterwards.

On Thursday of this coming week the Yarra City Carols by Candlelight will be in Citizens Park in Richmond from 6-9pm and our choir will be performing towards the start of the night.

Friday night sees us further celebrate the Christmas Season with the Combined Parish Carols in our church from 6-7pm followed by a BYO supper in the hall afterwards.

And, on Saturday of next weekend, our Parents and Friends are running their annual Cake Stall at the Collingwood Children’s Farm market.

Until next time, yours respectfully, Daniel

3. A note from the Crossing Supervisors

Greetings – your school crossing supervisors have been quiet all year with regards to any information from the City of Yarra to St John’s School.

The crossing supervisors undertake regular training updates to ensure the safety of all children and, while we are disappointed with the lack of respect from some members of the general public, we are grateful that teachers, parents, grandparents, carers and children appreciate our concern and guidance whilst children are crossing the busy Queens Parade.

We take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and New Years. We will miss the Year 6 students as they move on to the next stage of their life.

With care and regards from John and Dianne.
