Reflecting on Term 1 Week 1 2020 | go to Calendar »
1. From The Principal
Dear Parents & Families,
Welcome back to the new school year for 2020. I hope you have had a restful break during this particularly sad Christmas period with the bushfires.
We extend a very warm welcome to our new families and students at school this year, particularly our new Preps who begin their school journey with us.
I take this opportunity to introduce myself to you, as I have with our kind and caring staff this week. I am excited to be a part of your school community and look forward to meeting you all. Please come and introduce yourself to me; I will be making myself as available as possible particularly over these first few weeks.
I have come to this role from St Clement of Rome Primary School in Bulleen, where I was Deputy Principal, Student Wellbeing Leader and Learning Diversity Leader. I am passionate about the changing power of education, whether you are a child or an adult. In 2015 I completed my Masters in Education (Student Wellbeing) and have enrolled in further study this year to do a Graduate Diploma in Literacy Intervention.
It is my vision at St John’s to create a school where our students develop a strong sense of belonging, develop critical social & emotional skills, and are excited and inspired by learning opportunities that are rigorous, challenging and fun!
You may notice a few small changes almost immediately.
These include the gates being opened to welcome our students to school from 8.30am. At 8.45am, when the bell rings, students will be collected from the yard by their teacher to come in and prepare for the day ahead. The 8.55am bell signals the start of our day.
This year, in addition to our specialist subjects of Visual Arts with Ms Michele Davies, Mandarin with Ms Sarah Haung & Physical Education with Mr Anthony Falcone, our students will also engage with Digi Tech classes on a weekly basis to support this growing area.
These classes will be taught by Ms Carley Dowley. Additionally, students will participate in specialised Science classes on a fortnightly basis to deepen their scientific knowledge, understanding and critical thinking skills. These will be taught by myself and Ms Melanie Granata and will commence later in Term 1.
One other key change is that Assembly has moved from Friday mornings to Friday afternoons so that we can capitalise on the importance of morning learning blocks for literacy and numeracy for our students. I apologise in advance for any inconvenience this change may cause.
Likewise, we will be providing you with a weekly newsletter. At this point, Tuesday or Wednesday look like the best days to send this out to a) keep you informed of upcoming events at St John’s and b) reflect on the great work our students achieve on a weekly basis and celebrating these milestones together at our assemblies.
I thank you sincerely for the already warm welcomes I have received from staff, our students and from parents and our wider community. Again, please come and introduce yourself to me or stop by for a chat.

Dear parents, grand parents, friends and guardians and a big welcome to St John’s for a new year and a new decade, 2020!
Just a quick note to introduce the P&F team for 2020 and invite you all to get involved.

Vice President and Secretary: Vince Ficarra (Francesca – Grade 2/3 & Gabriella Prep/1)
Treasurer and major events coordinator: Melissa McIntosh (Xavier – grade 4/5)
Mother’s / fathers day stall coordinator: Bec Fanelli (Katherine 5/6)
Second hand uniform coordinator: Jennifer Jacobs-Vandegeer (Luke – grade 4/5 and Edith Prep/1)
General Committee Members: Danielle Gerecke (Alexis 2/3) and Bernadette Montalto
Class rep’s: We are looking for rep’s. Please contact me if you are interested or just want to know more.
The P&F has two main roles fundraising and social functions. Over the years we have raised thousands of dollars and as a result we have our beautiful new play spaces that the children, teachers and parents too, get to enjoy! In order to ensure that the P&F continues to achieve these goals, we need everyone to become involved in school activities. There is always so much going on and as they say, many hands make light work.
As a volunteer committee, we need helpers. Whether you are available during the day or night, for an hour or an afternoon, there is a function or event that needs your expertise. Our functions range from evening events for the parents to sausage sizzles, movie nights, lunch orders, cake stalls and many other things. It would be fantastic if everyone could think about one or two events that they could offer their time to, as well as joining the fun and getting involved in the activities.
At the end of the year, we asked our community to fill out a feed back survey. Thank you so much to everyone who filled it out. It has been a really helpful tool to reflect on what people enjoy and the results will help shape the coming year’s events.
We will have more info coming but our year, as usual, kicks off with a Welcome Picnic to be held on Friday 14 February. We would love you all to join us! This a family friendly event that every one can attend.
A friendly reminder that Sam from Clifton Hill Bakers Delight will be supplying lunch orders to the school. These are OPTIONAL and are to give parents an alternative for school lunches. They will be run on a Friday and will be ordered by parents DIRECTLY from a secure Bakers Delight website. This weekly option is in addition to our usual once a term lunch orders that will be run by the P&F. https://cliftonhillbakery.com.au
For those who follow social media there are also a couple of channels you can follow:

Facebook: Parents of St. John’s Clifton Hill. This is a closed group run by P&F parents not a public page. You can request to follow.
Also remember the school website Calendar is a great go to for up to date event info. You can even sync it with your phone calendar for extra convenience.

Thanks in advance for your support!
