Newsletter - Term 1 Week 2 2020

1. From The Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

And just like that, we have been back at school for a week already! Once again may I extend my thanks to the families of the St John’s community who continue to make me feel so welcome.

On Tuesday we celebrated our return to school with our Beginning of the School Year Mass. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate being together for the new school year. Our Year 6 students are currently participating in discussions around being our school leaders and we look forward to commissioning them at Mass, in their roles for 2020.  

Our Year 5 & 6 students have begun discussions around the planning of their camp to Canberra. It is a very exciting time for our students, however this year it is tempered with caution as we await ongoing advice from our tour organisers, and follow the weather predictions regarding the safety of travelling to, from and around Canberra.  Needless to say, the only consideration is for the safety of our students and teachers. At this stage we will continue to plan for Canberra, mindful that safety will always come first. The students have acknowledged and accepted this with outstanding maturity.

On Wednesday, student enthusiasm was high as they resumed both Visual Arts and Physical Education programs for the new year. In PE Mr Falcone kicked things off with a hockey clinic! The new Digi Tech program also commences this week.

Thank you to those families who have fed back that the gates opening at 8.30am has been helpful.  It is wonderful to see the students at school, with time to socialise, be active and have plenty of time to start their day in a calm and organised manner.  A reminder that until 8.55am, all entry is via the gates into the yard/garden between the church and the school, NOT through the school office. After 8.55am students are to enter through the office and be recorded as present on the roll.  They will need to see Gina as they enter. 

After consideration, the gate on Wellington St will no longer be opened in the morning or afternoon, as it cannot be actively supervised. 

A couple of reminders…

… that Gina is not in the office on Wednesdays this year. Melanie and myself will be taking charge so please bear with us as we do our utmost to support you.

… assembly is at 2.45pm on Friday afternoons now, not Friday mornings. Award recipients at assembly will be published in the newsletter each week.

… our whole school Welcome Picnic is Friday 14th Feb at 5.30pm in the yard.

… Tuesday 18th Feb from 3-7.45pm are our Parent – Teacher Conversations.

Once again, please come and introduce yourself to me if we have not yet met!

3. From The P&F

Dear parents, grand parents, friends and guardians and a big welcome to St John’s for a new year and a new decade, 2020!

Just a quick note to introduce the P&F team for 2020 and invite you all to get involved.

The parent team this year consists of:

President:    Julia Manickam (Eliza – grade 4/5 & Darcy – 2/3)

Vice President and Secretary:  Vince Ficarra (Francesca – Grade 2/3 & Gabriella Prep/1)

Treasurer and major events coordinator:      Melissa McIntosh (Xavier – grade 4/5)

Mothers / fathers day stall coordinator:       Bec Fanelli (Katherine 5/6)

Second hand uniform coordinator:    Jennifer Jacobs-Vandegeer (Luke – grade 4/5 and Edith Prep/1)

General Committee Members: Danielle Gerecke (Alexis 2/3) and Bernadette Montalto

Class rep’s: We are looking for rep’s. Please contact me if you are interested or just want to know more.

 

The P&F has two main roles fundraising and social functions. Over the years we have raised thousands of dollars and as a result we have our beautiful new play spaces that the children, teachers and parents too, get to enjoy! In order to ensure that the P&F continues to achieve these goals, we need everyone to become involved in school activities. There is always so much going on and as they say, many hands make light work.

As a volunteer committee, we need helpers. Whether you are available during the day or night, for an hour or an afternoon, there is a function or event that needs your expertise. Our functions range from evening events for the parents to sausage sizzles, movie nights, lunch orders, cake stalls and many other things. It would be fantastic if everyone could think about one or two events that they could offer their time to, as well as joining the fun and getting involved in the activities.

At the end of the year, we asked our community to fill out a feed back survey. Thank you so much to everyone who filled it out. It has been a really helpful tool to reflect on what people enjoy and the results will help shape the coming year’s events.

We will have more info coming but our year, as usual, kicks off with a Welcome Picnic to be held on Friday 14 February.  We would love you all to join us! This a family friendly event that every one can attend.

LUNCH ORDERS:

A friendly reminder that Sam from Clifton Hill Bakers Delight will be supplying lunch orders to the school. These are OPTIONAL and are to give parents an alternative for school lunches. They will be run on a Friday and will be ordered by parents DIRECTLY from a secure Bakers Delight website. This weekly option is in addition to our usual once a term lunch orders that will be run by the P&F. https://cliftonhillbakery.com.au

Facebook: Parents of St. John’s Clifton Hill. This is a closed group run by P&F parents not a public page. You can request to follow.

Also remember the school website Calendar is a great go to for up to date event info. You can even sync it with your phone calendar for extra convenience.
